Old names and new names
| Old name | New name | Para course |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency First Aid | Basic First Aid | Basic First Aid and CPR C / A + AED |
| Standard First Aid | Intermediate First Aid | Intermediate First Aid and CPR C + AED |
| Standard First Aid with BLS | Intermediate First Aid | Intermediate First Aid CPR BLS + AED |
Regulation 1101 still uses the old names. WSIB says Basic equals Emergency and Intermediate equals Standard. If your employer says Standard or Emergency, these courses still meet the rule.
Who needs each level
For a workplace covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act:
- Five or fewer people on a shift: at least one person needs Basic First Aid.
- Six or more people on a shift: at least one person needs Intermediate First Aid.
Not sure? Book Intermediate First Aid. Most workplaces with six or more people on a shift need that level.
College students, read your placement letter. ECE and child-care placements usually need Intermediate First Aid, not Basic. If your letter names a specific course, follow the letter.
What each course includes
Basic First Aid is the shorter level. It teaches core skills for common emergencies, including CPR and care for minor injuries. You choose CPR C or CPR A. AED training is included.
Intermediate First Aid is the longer, more complete level. It includes the Basic skills plus more training for serious injuries and medical emergencies. AED training is included. Choose CPR C, or CPR BLS if you work in healthcare.
How long each course takes
Both courses are blended. You start with a self-paced online part. Then you finish the hands-on skills in class with paramedic instructors in Mississauga.
| Course | Total time | Online | In class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic First Aid and CPR C / A + AED | 8 hours | 4 hours | 4 hours |
| Intermediate First Aid and CPR C + AED | 14 hours | 7 hours | 7 hours |
| Intermediate First Aid CPR BLS + AED | 14 hours | 7 hours | 7 hours |
Your certificate
EMT Canada issues Para's workplace certificates. Both levels are Ontario WSIB approved. Workplace first aid certificates in Ontario are valid for three years from the date of issue. Certificates issued under the old names stay valid until they expire.
